How Much Does a Dehumidifier Cost to Run in the UK?

Choosing a dehumidifier for winter? Running cost depends on the appliance's power draw, how long it runs and your electricity tariff. This guide shows how to estimate the cost before buying, using two Duronic models as examples.

How to calculate a dehumidifier's running cost

Use this formula: power in kilowatts × hours used × electricity price per kWh = estimated cost. Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000. For example, 300W is 0.3kW. Multiply 0.3 by the hours used and then by your tariff.

Worked examples for Duronic dehumidifiers

The examples below use an illustrative electricity rate of 25p per kWh, not a claim about your current tariff. They assume the appliance draws its full rated power for the entire period. Actual consumption varies as the compressor cycles and with room conditions.

Model Rated power Estimated cost per hour at 25p/kWh Estimated cost for 8 hours
Duronic DH121 300W 7.5p 60p
Duronic DH201 440W 11p 88p

At eight hours a day for 30 days, this full-power illustration works out at £18 for 300W and £26.40 for 440W. Use your own tariff and realistic running hours for a more useful estimate.

The DH121 is rated up to 12 litres per day with a 2.1L tank. The DH201 is rated up to 20 litres per day with a 5.1L tank. Extraction ratings are measured under specified conditions; the amount collected at home will vary with temperature, humidity and use.

What affects real-world cost?

  • How damp the room is and how much moisture is being produced.
  • Room temperature and the appliance's operating conditions.
  • Target settings and the time the compressor runs.
  • Ventilation, laundry habits and whether underlying leaks are addressed.

A dehumidifier is one part of moisture management, not a fix for leaks or building defects. Ventilate where practical, use extractor fans and investigate persistent damp. Read the UK Government home ventilation guide.

FAQs

Does a 20L dehumidifier always cost more to run?

The DH201 has a higher rated power in this comparison, but real running cost depends on operating time and how the appliance behaves in your room.

Is the hourly estimate exactly what I will pay?

No. It assumes full rated power for the whole hour. Compressor cycling and room conditions affect actual consumption.

Will a dehumidifier fix damp by itself?

No. It can remove moisture from indoor air but will not repair leaks or structural defects.
